WHAT IS COLORGUARD?

Colorguard is a fun activity that involves dancing, spinning flags & performing for thousands of people. We welcome all students to join our team- No experience needed. This team of Colorguard members has up to 50+ members and the full marching band team of over 200!  The choreography is written to music that the Forest Hills Marching Band performs. We work as a team throughout the Summer & Fall months to perform at home football games & competitions. We also travel around the country to perform in large parades and very large competition venues.   This has included places like Disney World, London England, New York City, New Orleans, California, NFL stadiums and more!

Extra Credit & PE Waiver
Participating in the Colorguard  earns students an additional credit and grade on your report card during first quarter!  It functions as an after school class that meets a few times per week and will not fill one of the 7 periods during the school day.  It is the only after school activity that also earns you high school credit.  Participate in the Colorguard also grants students a waiver from the PE graduation requirement, which can free up space for other courses.

This activity includes students from Anderson & Turpin.  It is one of the only activities that can keep your friend groups from Nagel together, regardless of which high school you attend.  You will make a ton of new friends, learn a lot and have many fun experiences in this group!

Basic Schedule Overview
The activity includes weekly practices throughout the late Spring, Summer and Fall.  The performance portion of the season runs from September through October and some years, goes a bit into November.    Practices for the Colorguard take place on Monday & Wednesday nights from 5:30-8:30.  There is a 2 week camp at the end of the summer.  We excuse vacations over during the summer months and ask that they are communicated with the coaches, but ask that students attend the 2 week camp that begins on July 26th. Once the school year begins, there is an added after school practice on Thursdays.  This group has an after school schedule that is similar to an athletic sport, but with slightly less practices and games.  Many of our students participate in multiple school activities. We work to accommodate those activities and ask that members discuss their schedule with the coaches during the Spring months to determine what colorguard schedule modifications may need to be made.

Participation Fees
There are 2 fees for this activity:
$TBD Supplies Fee.  This covers all uniform, equipment, shoes and other costs.
$175 Transportation Fee.  This is the standard transportation fee that our district charges for all activities.  It covers all busing for the school year

Additional Trips
Every other school year, we travel to perform in a parade outside of our state.  These are educational opportunities for our students to perform in different settings, as well as representing our school district.  We have traveled to Disney World, New York, New Orleans, Indianapolis, London and other cities in the past.  We plan to travel during the 2022-2023 school year.  We plan to finalize that destination late Spring.

These trips typically take place during the Winter or Spring months.  Participation in these trips is completely optional.

8th Grade Participation
This is a combined, school district performance group.  If a 2022-2023 8th grade student is interested in participation, we will permit that to occur. This can be an incredibly opportunity for these students to be a part of a very rewarding, educational and social group.   Like our 9-12 students, the 8th grade students would need to arrive at Turpin or Anderson for evening practices.  During the school year, there is 1 after school rehearsal per week for 10 weeks.  We will provide a school bus shuttle for any students who would need transportation to the high school.

Boosters & Parent Support
This is the largest "team" in the school district. It is an incredible network of awesome parents from around the school district.  We also have a booster group that provides resources for students & teachers for all 9 of our buildings programs.

We look forward to an incredible season and welcome all of our new students & parents!

Through all my seasons in guard, I have made so many wonderful memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The amount of amazing people that I have met and friends I have made through this activity is overwhelming. I have also been given incredible opportunities for leadership. I discovered my love for performing through guard, and have been able to perform in so many neat places. Colorguard takes a lot of hard work, but the payoff comes in meeting new people, making friends, and getting to perform and spin whilst having fun. - Kristin Hickey
